Editor, tools and utilities
Voice Access is a Google accessibility tool for Android that replaces touch input with spoken commands. The developer aims it at people who have difficulty manipulating a touch screen, for example because of paralysis, tremor or a temporary injury such as a broken wrist.
Everything runs through voice, so a user can move around the phone, act on what is on screen and write text without touching it. The developer describes it as a way to use an Android device by voice.
Basic navigation covers the core Android controls: saying "go back" or "go home" moves through the system, and saying an app's name, such as "open Gmail", launches it. These commands work from wherever you are on the phone, so you do not need to reach for the home button or the app drawer.
The developer lists these commands as the starting point for controlling the device without touch.
Screen control commands act on whatever is currently displayed. Saying "tap next" presses a labelled button on the page, and "scroll down" moves the view the way a finger swipe would.
These are the commands most often used while reading or working through an app, since they let you select items and move through long pages without touching the glass.
Text editing and dictation let you write and correct text entirely by speaking. Saying "type hello" enters the words you dictate, and "replace coffee with tea" swaps one word for another in what you have already written.
The developer groups these commands with the others, so you can switch between navigating, tapping and writing in the same session.
You can open Voice Access by saying "Hey Google, Voice Access" through the Google Assistant, but this needs "Hey Google" detection turned on first. You can also tap the Voice Access notification or the blue Voice Access button and start talking. Saying "stop listening" pauses it, and turning off its switch under Settings, Accessibility, Voice Access disables it completely.
To learn the commands, the built-in tutorial walks through starting the tool, tapping, scrolling, basic text editing and getting help. Saying "Help" at any time brings up a short list of commands, and the developer links a separate Voice Access help page for further support.
The build we hold is Voice Access 17.0.896515536 (APKS split bundle) for Android 12L and up.
