What Yandex Translate is used for

Yandex Translate is a text translator for reading and writing in a foreign language. It suits travellers who need to read menus, road signs or guidebook pages, and anyone who wants to look up a phrase in another language.

Its main modes are typed text, spoken phrases, photos and web pages. Each one is covered in the sections below.

Typed translation online and offline

When online, the app translates between any pair of 100 languages. Automatic language detection works out the source language, and predictive typing helps while you type.

Offline translation is narrower. After you download the language packs for French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish or Turkish, and turn on offline mode in Settings, you can translate those six into English without a connection.

Speaking phrases and hearing translations

You can speak words or phrases in Russian, Ukrainian, English or Turkish and have them translated into any supported language. The app can also read the translation aloud.

This suits conversations where typing is slow, such as ordering food or asking directions.

Translating photos and web pages

Point the camera at a menu, sign or book page, or pick a photo with text from your gallery, and the translation appears over the image. This needs a connection. Text recognition covers 45 languages, including Czech, Polish, Chinese, Portuguese and Ukrainian.

The app can also translate entire websites within its own window. Separately, you can select a word or phrase in other apps on your phone and translate just that selection.

Dictionary, favorites and translation history

The built-in dictionary shows word meanings alongside usage examples, for most of the supported languages. It is useful when you want to see how a word is used, not just its single translation.

Translations you want to keep can be saved to Favorites. Everything you translate is also recorded in a history you can review later.
