What ZArchiver does on Android

ZArchiver is an archive manager for Android. It packs files into a single compressed archive and unpacks archives that other tools have made. The developer also positions it as a way to manage backups of installed apps that are stored in archive form.

The developer describes the interface as simple and functional, and the app is aimed at people who regularly move compressed files on their phone or tablet.

Creating and editing archives

Compression writes 7z, zip, bzip2, gzip, XZ, lz4, tar and zst archives. To compress, you select files using the icons beside their names, choose Compress from the menu, then set the options and confirm.

Existing archives can be changed without rebuilding them by hand. The listing says you can add or remove files in zip, 7z, tar, apk and mtz archives. Archives can also be created with a password.

Opening, browsing and extracting archives

Decompression covers a long list of formats, including RAR and RAR5, ISO, DMG, CAB, ARJ, LZH, CHM, WIM, DEB and RPM. For most of these you can also view the contents without extracting everything.

Tapping an archive's name brings up extraction options, including Extract Here. The app can extract only part of an archive, open compressed files directly, and open an archive that arrives as an attachment in a mail app.

Split, multi-part and password-protected archives

Multi-part archives can be created and extracted for 7z, and for RAR the app can only extract them. Split archives in 7z, zip and rar formats, named as 7z.001, zip.001, part1.rar or z01, can be joined and extracted.

Some archives are encrypted and need a password to open. The developer advises against using the phone's own lock password for them. Small files can be opened without first extracting them to a temporary folder.

Restoring app backups and handling filenames

The app can install an APK and its OBB data file from an archive that holds a backup. This is the main way the listing ties ZArchiver to app backups.

Multithreading is supported for compression and extraction on processors with several cores. Filenames in UTF-8 and UTF-16 are supported, so names with national characters work.
