GoPay starts selling digital gold from Rp1,000 inside its wallet app

The new GoPay Investasi section holds its gold in an account kept apart from everyday spending money. Treasury supplies the product, and Indonesia's commodity futures regulator Bappebti supervises it.

Gold for the price of a sachet of coffee

GoPay users can now buy gold in the same app they use to pay at a warung, and they can start with one thousand rupiah. GoPay has launched a feature called GoPay Investasi, and its first product is GoPay Emas Digital by Treasury, which lets users buy and sell digital gold through the GoPay app. The minimum purchase is Rp1,000.

For an existing user the change is simple to state. Money that used to sit in the wallet waiting for the next bill can now go into gold, in small amounts, without a trip to a gold shop. Bisnis.com described the launch as an alternative way into gold that does not involve buying physical gold directly.

Kelvin Timotius, GoPay's consumer business director, spoke at the launch event in Jakarta on Wednesday, 21 October, VOI reported. The developer quoted him as saying the product was meant to let anyone "make their money grow safely" in the GoPay app.

A separate account for the gold

The main structural change is where the money goes. GoPay also provides an investment account kept apart from the account used for daily transactions, which Bisnis.com said is meant to help users manage investment money in a more structured way. According to GoPay, the separation is meant to help users build a more disciplined investing habit. It works much like keeping a savings jar on a different shelf from the housekeeping purse.

Buying takes a few steps, according to GoPay's own guide. First, the user opens the GoPay app and picks Investasi from the finance menu. Then they choose Emas, select Emas Digital and tap buy. The developer says digital gold can be bought and sold instantly, without waiting.

Users do not have to change anything to keep paying and transferring as before. The gold section is an addition, not a replacement for the wallet.

Who stands behind the product

The gold itself is not GoPay's. The product carries the Treasury brand, but reports disagree on the name of the partner company. CNN Indonesia named it as PT Indonesia Logam Pratama, licensed and supervised by Bappebti, the commodity futures trading regulator, and GoPay's own announcement gives the same name. IDN Times, by contrast, said the product came out of a partnership with PT Indonesia Digital Emas, and Warta Ekonomi and VOI used that name too.

There is a smaller discrepancy over the date. Bisnis.com and VOI put the launch on Wednesday 21 October. Tangerang Online dated the official launch to Thursday 22 October 2026, and Katadata quoted Timotius from a written statement dated Thursday 22 October.

On security, Majalah Lintas reported that the app uses layered protection, including two-factor authentication, a PIN, OTP codes and biometric authentication. IDN Times added the usual caution. It noted that gold investment does not guarantee a profit in the short term. It also advised users to weigh their goals, time horizon and finances before buying digital gold.

Why GoPay says it is selling gold

GoPay's case rests on two things: demand and friction. The World Gold Council's July 2026 Gold Demand Trends report put Indonesian gold demand at 15 tonnes in the second quarter of 2026, up 40 per cent year on year, Surabaya Inside reported, citing GoPay.

The friction comes from GoPay's own research. Its internal survey of 25 to 30 year olds found that people struggled to find time to visit physical outlets, met limited stock in the market and worried about loss or theft. Timotius also tackled the idea that gold is only for people with money to spare, saying that saving in gold is often seen as an expensive form of investment. The Rp1,000 minimum is GoPay's answer to that.

Surabaya Inside framed the launch as part of a wider shift. It said GoPay aims to grow from an e-wallet into a platform for holding assets. GoPay was already making a similar pitch before the launch. Suara Merdeka reported that at a press gathering in Salatiga, GoPay presented features ranging from a puzzle game to gold investment starting at Rp1,000.

A new look for gifting by QR code

The latest update to the Android app is smaller and lighter in tone. According to the developer's release notes, GoPay Hadiah QR, the feature for sending money as a gift, has been redesigned with GoPay's GoPaynesia characters. The notes also say the sender's personal message is now shown prominently to the person receiving the gift, and that bugs which got in the way of transactions have been fixed. The changes come in version 2.21.3.

The gifting format is not new. Antara reported in an earlier Lebaran season that GoPay had introduced GoPay Hadiah THR, built around the idea of a gift envelope. Recipients could claim the money through a dedicated link or by scanning a QR code. At that time GoPay warned about scam links. It said genuine gift links always begin with https://app.gopay.co.id/.

A wallet that keeps adding rooms

GoPay is the digital wallet of GoTo, the group behind Gojek, and it is published by PT. GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk. The developer describes it as one place for free bank transfers, QRIS payments, phone credit and bills. Its listing promises free transfers to any bank up to 100 times a month, plus top-ups and cash withdrawals at Alfamart and Indomaret.

Paying in shops runs on QRIS, Indonesia's national QR standard. GoPay also offers QRIS Tap, which uses NFC so that a phone can be held against a reader on public transport or at a car park, tvOne reported.

The gold launch follows other additions this year. In July 2026, Antara reported that GoPay had added an overseas transfer feature for sending money to bank accounts and e-wallets in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, India, Saudi Arabia and Thailand. In August, GoPay became official payment partner of DBL Indonesia, the youth basketball competition, for the 2026 to 2027 season, and added a DBL section to the app for buying match tickets.
