Contributing editor, apps and storefronts
- Calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data, alongside your existing SIM
- Encrypted calls using SRTP and TLS
- AI-generated summaries of calls
- Smart inbox for shared call handling
- Installable on several devices in parallel
- Other satellite users can call you on satellite
What satellite is and who it suits
satellite is a calling app that works next to your existing mobile connection. It gives you a separate number that people using satellite can reach you on, whether they are friends, family or business contacts. It suits people who want to make and take calls on a line that does not depend only on their mobile carrier.
Use requires verification before you can place calls. The listing describes calls that look and work much like ordinary phone calls, but run through the app.
Calling over Wi-Fi, mobile data and EDGE
Calls can go over a WLAN connection or over mobile data. The listing says voice quality holds up even on EDGE, the slowest mobile data standard still in common use.
The app is reachable for incoming calls when it is not open on screen, according to the listing. That means you do not need to keep it active to receive a call.
Encrypted calls with SRTP and TLS
The listing states that calls are encrypted using SRTP for the audio stream and TLS for the connection. These are standard protocols for securing voice traffic in transit.
Encryption is described as part of every call, not as an option you switch on.
Smart inbox and AI call summaries
The smart inbox is the place where calls are handled, and the listing describes it as built for working through calls together with other people. It is aimed at teams or households that share a line.
The app also produces AI-generated summaries of calls. The listing does not say how the summaries are produced or where they are stored.
Using satellite on several devices
The listing says satellite can be installed on several devices at the same time. Each installation can be used in parallel with your mobile connection on your primary phone.
Because the number is tied to the app, people who call you can reach you on any of the devices where it is set up.
What's new
- Calls can now be transferred to any number entered via the dialpad
- The channel icon is shown again in the inbox and contacts overview, including logged-in/logged-out state
- Short phone numbers (e.g. the sipgate test number "10000") were incorrectly displayed as North American numbers ("+1 0000") and now appear as received
- The app now requires Android 8 or higher
