Blackmagic Camera adds optimisation for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra

Tuned for Samsung's new foldables

Blackmagic Design has optimised its Blackmagic Camera app for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Owners of either phone are the main group affected by the latest Android update. According to the developer's release notes, the changes come in version 3.5.1, which also includes a number of fixes and performance improvements. Blackmagic has not published details of what the Fold 8 work changes on those handsets.

The two phones are recent hardware. 9to5Google reported that Samsung announced the Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8 on July 22. Samsung said sales would begin on August 7 in selected markets before expanding globally. Blackmagic's technical specifications for the Android app already list Galaxy Z Fold models among its supported Samsung phones.

Follows a larger release earlier this month

This update follows a bigger one only weeks ago. On October 7, Newsshooter reported that Blackmagic had released a version of the Android app that added a search function in settings, shortcuts that open the app with a preset already loaded, and 10-bit remote previews on supported phones and tablets. The same release brought Android 17 optimisations and reduced battery use.

According to the Japanese outlet PRONEWS, the preset shortcuts appear when the app icon is long-pressed on the home screen, showing recently used presets. The October release was also tuned for the OPPO Find X10 and OnePlus 16 series and added OPPO O-Log2 recording on compatible devices, PRONEWS reported.

Cinema camera controls on a phone

Blackmagic Camera is a free app that puts the company's film camera controls and image processing on Android phones and tablets. Users can set frame rate, shutter angle, white balance and ISO manually. They can also record to Blackmagic Cloud, which lets editors work on the footage in DaVinci Resolve. The developer notes that some features depend on the device.
